Why You Sometimes Have to “Step Off the Path” to Find Yourself
We spend our lives following a plan.
School.
More school.
Work.
The “right” path—the one that makes sense.
And most of the time, we never stop to ask whether it’s actually our path.
We simply keep going.
Because that’s what everyone does.
Because it’s expected.
Because it feels safe.
When you’re doing everything right… but it doesn’t feel right
The hardest part is that, from the outside, everything can look perfectly fine.
You’re checking all the boxes.
Taking the next logical step.
Doing “the right thing.”
But deep down, something feels off.
You realize you’re adapting to expectations rather than truly living your own life.
And that’s not a feeling you can ignore forever.
You can push it aside.
Drown it out.
Convince yourself that “this is just how life is.”
But it always comes back.
The decision that doesn’t make sense… to anyone else
The moment you decide to step away from the plan, people often don’t understand.
“Why would you leave when you’ve already come this far?”
“Why slow down when you could keep going?”
“Why choose uncertainty?”
And honestly?
Sometimes it doesn’t even make sense to you.
You simply know that if you stay, you’ll be betraying yourself.
And sometimes that feeling is stronger than logic.
Fear… or intuition?
That’s the question you ask yourself.
Because the two can feel remarkably similar.
The difference is where they’re leading you.
Fear keeps you where you are.
Intuition pulls you forward—even when the path feels uncomfortable.
And often, the only way to know the difference is to take the first step.
What happens when you step away
The moment you choose a different path than the one that was planned for you, something changes.
Not immediately around you.
But within you.
Suddenly, there’s space.
Space to think.
Space to feel.
Space to be alone with yourself without constant pressure.
And that can feel… uncomfortable.
Because when life finally slows down, you begin to hear the thoughts you’ve been trying to silence.
But that’s also the moment you truly begin to discover who you are.
Who are you without the plan?
Without the role.
Without the expectations.
Without everything you “should” be.
It’s not an easy question.
But it’s an essential one.
Because as long as you’re following someone else’s script, you’ll never have the space to discover what you truly want.
It’s not about running away.
It’s about coming home to yourself.
From the outside, it may look like you’re taking a step backward.
Like you’re pressing pause.
Like you’re “wasting time.”
In reality, it may be one of the most important steps you’ll ever take.
Because you stop living according to what makes sense to everyone else.
And you start discovering what makes sense to you.
What I would tell my younger self
Don’t be afraid of leaving something unfinished.
Be afraid of spending your life finishing something that was never truly yours.
And maybe one final question:
